Rocking the Shades in SoCAL - Three

We pile back into the car and head off to the park, which is on the top of a small mountain area overlooking most of downtown San Diego. The evident sign that we had arrived were a huge line of cars on both sides of the road, including a riced out Mustang (!), I saw a Prelude with one of those huge aluminum wings, and other various rockets. The park had 2 full bball courts inside a caged area, a huge center lawn area, playground off to the side, and a ton of various tents and stone picnic tables around the side. Marge's crew was really close to the bball area, as it was about 5 pm when we got there and it wasn't really hot anymore. Everyone pretty much made a bee-line to the bball court, where a lot of Marge's friends were playing and man they were tall. One hella tall kid named Kenny who must've been at least 6'4, some thick pho thug looking guy (but I'm sure he's a real nice guy) named Tien, and there was even this tall white guy that was trying to do some exhibition dunks.

They had just finished a game, so Fling, Philip, Tim, Johnny, and I basically formed a quick team and took on 5 of their guys. I was pretty much useless I think, I dunno, bball is no longer a real hardcore passion of mine anymore as I have taken one too many elbows to the head and rolled one too many ankles. The other guys did well, Fling, Mac, Tim, and Johnny. We lost a close one by a basket or something, I think we played til 15, with all their girls and our girls cheering on the sidelines. After our unfortunate defeat, we decided not to run it back, and instead Fling headed over to the next court and I followed him to shoot around. Pretty soon our posse just migrated over, and eventually a 3 on 3 game ensued, with Fling, Jen, and Sharon against Tim, Johnny, and myself. Altho I was pretty much messing around, I tossed one ball up softly underhand and got swatted like a mother by Jen. OOps, mad laughter ensues hehe. That was a fun game, as Jen ran circles around me doing post up moves left and right. Apparently she was the only one of us who actually had true bball coaching, but she's got a nice soft inside jumper.

After our small half-court melee, these white boys and indian guy show up and they want to play us 5 on 5. so 4 white boys and the Indian guy form one, while Fling, Philip, Johnny, Jen, and me form the other team. They had like two huge thick white guys that weren't very good players but they outweighed us by a good 25 lbs at least. Mac twisted his foot in the starting few minutes of the game, and after a 1-0 score by them that seemed to hold forever, the game started seeing more action with everyone playing pretty tough. Jen was definitely the MVP, putting in soft jumper after soft jumper. Wonderful stroke, and alas we pulled off an 11-10 win. I blew like 2 easy peasy lay-ups and only contributed one bucket. boo.

After this final game, we headed back to the picnic tent/tables, where Marge's friends were hella nice and hooked us up with some burgers. Fling, Mac, and I grabbed a half-inflated soccer ball and kicked that around for a while since originally Fling and I wanted to hit the volleyball around but the net was already being taken down. After a quick burger and observing lots of cute girls walking around to the table NEXT to ours, the wild filipinos in their group started lighting up a number of rockets and sparklers. Some of the guys jumped on top of the ground sparklers and spun around. A few of the rockets had bum fuses that required extra re-lighting, and at one point, they lined up like 8 in a row, lit them all, 4 flew up, 3 didn't fly and blew up on the spot and the last one was just sitting there so one filipino guy went up to look at it and it literally blew up in his face. Fortunately he was alright so all of us just had a huge laugh about it.

Soon after, everyone just started cleaning up and gathering stuff, Marge was kicking soccer balls against the fence, Philip kicked the ball OVER the fence, Felix helped me stealth photo these two cute girls sitting on the park bench, some little kid was adorable enough to kick the ball around for our amusement, Marge almost kicked the ball into some old asian grannies walking around, and we took some group pics which included Felix attempting to lick Philip's ear. A group discussion ensues on whether or not we are going to stay and watch fireworks from the park but it was getting chilly and we were post-sweaty and getting cold so we piled back into the car, drove down the hill for about 1 mile, only to see the fireworks starting... so we pull over to the side of the road (where a few other cars had done the same), and all got back out to watch. Marge and Jen had some kind of WWF wrestling match. It was kinda cool cause we could see 3 shows at the same time, including from Sea World, the County Fair, and something else. Mac set up his camera via remote and we took a few more pics before piling back in and driving back to Marge's apt. On the ride back home, I was in the car with Felix, Johnny, Jenny, and George, with me being sandwiched in the back between Jenny and George. From my perspective, it seemed like those two had some 'chemistry' going, with discussions ranging from spanish music to who knows what, but all I remember was I had to LEAN hella forward so those two could get their mack on and I wouldn't be intercepting any cupid arrows flying out of their eyes!
